What
is a Domain Name?
A
Domain Name is simply an address or location on the
Internet that is Human Friendly. Technically
speaking, a Domain Name is an alias for an Internet
Protocol (IP) Address. The IP address for this web
site is: 208.146.240.204 which is not as easy to
remember as our Domain Name: thednsplace.com

Domain Names can be up to 63 characters long (plus
the TLD extension, ie., .com, .net, or .org) and
can contain letters, digits, and hyphens. (Names
can not start or end with a hyphen.)

Note: In the past Domain
Names could only be up to 26 characters. There are
some older browsers and other software that do not
support the new longer Domain Names.
What is the difference between
.COM, .NET, and .ORG?
.COM, .NET, and .ORG are know as
Top Level Domains (TLDs). In the past there were
restrictions on who could register a (1st level)
Domain Name under each of these TLDs. There are
still restrictions with the .edu, .gov, and .mil
TLDs but anyone may register a Domain Name under
.COM, .NET, and .ORG In fact, most people grab all
three TLDs for their Domain Name. Typically the
three TLDs are as follows:
.COM - For Commercial
Organizations
.NET - For Network Providers
.ORG - For Non-Profit
Organizations
What about other top level
domains?
You
can now register the following other Top Level
Domains with The DNS Place:
.ca
.co.uk
.org.uk
How do I register a Domain
Name?
The
first step is to check that the name you want is
available. Then you need to fill out a simple
online form then submit the form. Complete
instructions are included on the form.
What happens to my application
after I submit it?
First, our server reviews the
application data for errors. Then billing is done
(via a secure SSL connection with our bank.) Last,
the Domain Name application data is passed on to
SRS (Shared Registration System) which is where all
.COM, .NET, and .ORG Domain Names are officially
registered.
Note: The billing data you
provide is not passed on to SRS. We do our own
billing and the data you provide us is used for
billing purposes only.
How long will the registration
process take?
Once
you have submitted your Domain Name application,
your Domain Name is registered. There is no delay
what-so-ever! Note however that it may take up to
24 hours for your new Domain Name to be added to
the Root Name Servers. (They are updated once
daily.)
Why doesn't my Domain Name show up
in WhoIs?
Each company that registers Domain
Names is responsible for their own Whois service.
Some only list domains that they have registered.
We recommend that you use our complete Whois look
up service.
How much does it cost to register a
Domain Name?
That depends on which company you
choose to register your Domain Name with. Many add
extra fees to their advertised prices - some
unscrupulous companies even advertise that it is
free but upon reading the fine print at their web
sites you'll find that they do not understand what
the word free means - and their fees tend to be the
largest.

Here at The DNS Place your total,
full-inclusive cost is $20 -
COMPLETE! There are NO other fees, period!
You can even save more money by pre-paying for up
to ten years. Click Here
to see full Pricing and multi-year
discounts.
What is meant by Domain Name
Parking?
In
order to register a Domain Name you must provide
Primary and Secondary Name Server information.
There are a lot of reasons why you may not be ready
with that data at the time you register your Domain
Name, so we provide free Domain Name Parking. In
other words, we let you park your new Domain on our
Name Servers. This will provide the necessary DNS
that is required to register a Domain Name -
however the Domain Name will not be reachable via
web browsers nor can it be used for email. If you
need this, view our Web Hosting Site for details
and pricing.
Do you provide web site hosting and
web site design services?
Of course. Our Parent Company is a
full service Web Hosting Provider and Colocation
Provider. You can visit our site on the Web at:
www.hostdrive.com Pricing
starts as low as $9.95/mo.
